May/June/July 2021

The past few months have been huge for us. We have been hard at work on solidifying 2 programs; Our winter weather program and our new harm reduction program.

Our winter weather program is something we have been doing since the beginning of HOPE. We supply clothing and items to the homeless community that will help them survive the extreme cold. Last year we contacted Empowerment Plan, a company that not only created and manufactures The Coat (a heavy duty winter jacket that also serves as a sleeping bag) but employs people who are homeless and helps them better their situations by paying them to attend classes and other services they may need. In May, Empowerment Plan contacted us and let us know that they could supply us with 100 of The Coat. We were ecstatic to hear this and on June 4th we drove The Tardis up to Detroit to pick them up.

Ever wonder what 100 large heavy duty winter coats looks like stored in a small apartment? Well here you go. This also acted as the impetuous for us to finally get a storage locker.

The second program we have been working on is our new harm reduction program. Our program is based around distributing Naloxone, an anti-overdose medicine that when used on someone who is overdosing, will remove the opioids from the receptors in their brain and bring them out of the overdose. It is an easy and safe way to save lives.

We have been lucky enough to team up with Harm Reduction Ohio to supply us with Naloxone in the form of a nasal spray called Narcan. This form of Naloxone is great for distribution because it is simple to use and can easily be carried. Unfortunately, drug use and overdose is a common cause of death in the homeless community. Our goal is to never have anyone overdose without someone nearby being able to save them.

That brings us to yesterday. We were once again part of an outreach event held by Fleurs Dream in Columbus, OH. We love these events and we very happy with the turn out. We were able to

distribute Shoes, Shirts, Backpacks, Water bottles, as well as Narcan and other harm reduction supplies. We are so thankful to Fleurs for allowing us to take part and we look forward to working with them for a long time to come.
